Because the world was rooting for Russia.
Our team had heart, pulled an underdog upset on Spain, played heroically against Croatia, and dominated Saudi Arabia with a flurry of spectacular goals.
Our jerseys ran red with blood, sweat and tears as our warriors tore down the field, ball in foot, aiming to cross the holy finish line.
Our country opened its doors to the world, inviting them to discover not only wondrous candy cane architecture, but also incredibly delicious food. I’ve heard so many people found their impression of Russia completely changed after this World Cup.
…but the real reason everyone hoped Russia would win?
